My JD 790 just rounded 50 hours and is now due for the first scheduled maintenance (oil change, air filter cleaning, etc.). I don't really have a trailer at my disposal to take the tractor to the dealer and wouldn't want to leave it there anyway. Is having the dealership come service it at my property the best thing to do? Or are the procedures simple and "idiot proof" enough that I should just take the time on the weekend to buy the supplies at TSC and do it myself? Since the tractor is under warranty I'm especially concerned about doing (or not doing) something that would void the warranty.

I've got a NH TC29 that just rounded 50 hours. I was faced with the same situation as you--no trailer and a dealer that's over an hour away. A quick read of the warranty raised no trouble flags. I spent a couple of hours this weekend on the service. Used NH parts and made sure to tuck away the receipts in case the service/parts were ever questioned. I'd imagine your 790 requires about the same service--change oil and oil filter, change hydro filter, change fuel filter, lube, etc. If you are comfortable changing oil, it isn't much of a big deal. My only problem was no bleeding the fuel system enough after I changed the fuel filter. Once the tractor died and wouldn't restart, I had to bleed again. Although I was worried at the time, I was able to get it fired up and running on my second bleed attempt. ....

My JD790 also rounded the 50 hours last weekend - service calls for changing the oil and filter, checking the air filter, lube levels, etc. Check the fuel filter, you can see if there is water in the clear bowl. No need to remove if there is none present. Be sure to check your lug nuts, each time I have checked mine, they needed a little tightening. I also greased the loader, axle, steering and clutch and brake linkage. I also checked the loader and chassis bolts, found a few loose, I guess 50 hours of loader use will do that. If you maintain vehicles, the tractor is not any more difficult. ....

I have a NH TC33D with about 20 hours on it. My dealer is going to come & pick it up service it & only charge me for the Filters & fluids. I will probably have balast put in the tires & forks on the loader bucket also. My dealer does not charge for the service or pick up. Try to get yours to do this or is my guy just too nice? ....

The NH dealership where I work does the 50 hr services on-site. We charge only for parts (oil, filters, etc). No labor or mileage charges on the 50hr service. I find it a good opportunity to answer questions that come up after an owner has operated the unit for some time, and the owner also gets to see first hand how to perform the service and review for instance, where all the grease fittings are. ....

I contacted the dealer I bought the tractor from (Ag-Power in Terrel, TX.) and they didn't sound too keen on the idea of servicing at my property and definitely wanted to come and pick it up to bring to their shop to do the maintenance (charging me for the trip, etc.). I think I'm going to go ahead and request that they do the service at my property, however, because I would definitely like to see what all they do, see where the grease fittings are, etc. and maybe learn something. Too bad Ag-Power isn't as customer service oriented as some of the NH dealers you all are talking about. ....
